I couldn’t comment either– maybe a comment approval setting. Thank you for the link, Elena, I just looked through the books there, and the author bios.

The website won’t let me comment on Elizabeth Lapman’s inquire, so I am adding it here.

Buenos Dias,
Our 6th grade teachers (classroom) are building a curriculum integrating the Social Studies topic of Latin America into the work they do for Readers’ Workshop. One of the things we desperately need is a ton of non-fiction and fiction chapter books for students. Subtopics can include immigration, religion, indigenous people, e…[Read more]-

Are these classrooms heritage classrooms? If so, there is a children’s book from Mexico that I’d really recommend (if not, it will be too difficult) called “Las culturas prehispánicas”, part of the Cronito en la historia series by Editorial Trillas.
I was hoping to get to the chapter about the Olmecas with my high school freshmen this year…[Read more]

Does anyone have resources for training (or better yet trainers) for English writing professionals (who are monolinguals) working with a lot of heritage speakers (mostly Spanish but also Polish and other Chicagoland languages)? Our Academic Enrichment Center folks need help getting up to speed on how to work with bilinguals (and L2) writers. Thank…[Read more]

Something I used with my Native Speakers, ESOL, and AP Language classes is transitional words. I also used concordance tools (corpora analysis tools) to determine how the students were using the language in writing exercises i.e. frequently using “like” or “because”. Show them hoe they could replace certain terms and add transition words to…[Read more]

Hi folks. Wouldn’t it be great to get a snapshot of what all of us as heritage language teachers are doing on a single day, across the country? I’ve got an idea here that involves minimal work on your part, but would benefit you (getting to see the work of others from a single day – snapshot style). Interested? See my post about it here!…[Read more]

For my Heritage Learners class at City College, CUNY, I’m using some microcuentos by Cortázar and Monterroso. They are too young to relate to the HL stories in their textbook, but I find that they can engage with shorter stories and we go from there to longer pieces. If anyone wants the Word docs, they’re 1 and 2 pages.

Hi all,
I am looking for a short story from one of the thematic units developed by Esteban and Yanina Hernández. It is from a book that is very difficult to find anymore. The name of the story is “Yo me llamo Antonio” by Sabine Ulibarri from the book ” Pupurupú: Cuentos de niños” TIA-
Hi Wendy,
It looks like the book is available at the University of Colorado, I don’t know if that’s accessible for you. I’ll ask Esteban y Yanina if they have any ideas on how to find it. Thanks! http://www.worldcat.org/title/pupurupu-cuentos-de-ninos-childrens-stories/oclc/25901134

Hi all! I am revamping my Spanish for Heritage Learners syllabus and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on readings to incorporate? This is for a 300-level course. Thanks!
-
Hi Katie! In one of our workshop videos there are a lot of suggestions, they might be mostly for lower levels but you might get some ideas. It’s at 1:09:00 in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5gV3tVBu3E

I would like to use and remix Margarita Casas’ materials using OER for a course I am developing, but I am not sure how to give credit to her since there is no Creative Commons logo on her materials. Any advice?
-
That is a great idea! Some of her materials have CC licenses so she might still be willing to let you use the things that aren’t labeled with licenses. You can try contacting her to explain your idea and ask what she thinks (her contact info is here http://cf.linnbenton.edu/artcom/foreign_language/casasm/web.cfm?pgID=13). Please keep us updated…[Read more]
