As a product of the county I currently work for, I struggled in my young adult life to embrace my cultural/ethnic identity. It wasn’t until my experience in college that I realized how powerful my native tongue and cultural identity really were, and I took the time to re-learn and educate myself on my history and my origins. In doing so, my bilingual identity has provided me with an array of work and personal opportunities. My ethos as a teacher is to have my Spanish-speaking learners embrace their fullest selves and invest in their cultural/ethnic origins in order to feel valued, heard, and seen.
