I am a true Heritage Spanish learner myself.  My mom was born in Cuba and my dad in Columbus, OH.  I grew up speaking English at home but with Spanish speaking grandparents.  I learned to communicate in Spanish simply based on hearing as a child, however, I learned formally as I went into HS and college.  Spanish, and more importantly, culture, has played a large role in my life and in my desire to become a teacher.  I have been teaching Heritage Spanish for the past 3 years and finally feel as though I have found my calling.
