How Has Spanish Played a Role in Your Personal and Professional Life? |
Spanish and all forms and versions has played a major role in my everyday life. I spoke and understood Spanish since birth and went to school in Mexico for 1st grade. We grew up bilingual and spoke Spanish to family, friends, neighbors, and places in our community (Chicago Albany Park and Logan Square).
Professionally, I taught HS Spanish and Heritage Speakers for 9 years. I am not the WL Instructional Coach for KCKPS.

More About Me |
I identify as a Heritage Speaker. I was born and raised in Chicago – Logan Square. My mother is Puerto Rican and my father is Mexican. I know the feeling of living between two worlds, sometimes three and the feeling of not being “enough” of one ethnic group. I wasn’t Puerto Rican enough, Mexican enough and the USA I sure was different. Spanish has been taught to us since birth. We moved to Mexico and lived with our grandparents for a year where I learned the basics of reading and writing in first grade. When we returned to Chicago, I was seven years old and was provided ELL services. Patrick Henry Elementary Schools provided Bilingual services. Later, James Monroe Elementary provided ELL pullout support.
