About the presenter:
Carl S. Blyth is Professor of French Linguistics, and Director of the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning at the University of Texas at Austin, USA. His research interests include discourse analysis, intercultural pragmatics and language learning technology. He is currently working on the monograph entitled Languaculture: From Threshold Concept to Transformative Learning (under contract, John Benjamins). His most recent book is co-edited book with Dr. Joshua Thoms (Utah State University) entitled Open education and foreign language learning and teaching: The rise of a new knowledge ecology (Multilingual Matters, 2021).
About this module:
This module focuses on key concepts for the creation and use of Open Education Resources (OER) in language education in general, and Heritage Spanish in particular. In his presentation at the 6th TeCHS Summer Workshop (June 25, 2020), Dr. Blyth provides core definitions on Open Education Resources and Practices (OER- OEP) and explains the paradigm shift these materials bring to language teaching and learning. After contrasting Copyright vs. Creative Commons affordances and limitations, Dr. Blyth characterize and exemplifies different OER types for Spanish language teaching. His presentation concludes with a hands-on activity modeling the process of searching, finding, and implementing OER for teaching Spanish at diverse levels of instruction.
