¡Felicidades a Samantha Dominguez!

¡Felicidades a Samantha Dominguez de Campbell ISD, nuestro Heritage Student Spotlight por el mes de mayo! En sus propias palabras:

My name is Samantha Yurixia Dominguez. I am currently in high school, but will graduate in 2023, and will be a first-generation college student. I was born in Greenville, Texas but my family is from Guanajuato, Mexico. I am hoping to get into a good college to become an ophthalmologist or an architect.

Throughout my whole life my mom has always told me that speaking two languages was a blessing for me and that it would open a lot of doors. My mom is who I have to thank for my Spanish. She’s the one who taught me. I use Spanish everywhere, especially at my house.

One piece of advice I would give another heritage student is to practice as much as possible, to use any chance you get to speak Spanish, and to be proud of knowing another language, and if possible to learn another one. Nowadays everyone makes speaking another language not a big deal, but it is a very big deal and very helpful to those who can’t speak English. It helps us help them.

There are a lot of things I love about my heritage language. It gives me the chance to help people who don’t understand English or who can’t speak it. The feeling I get afterwards is great and I wouldn’t give it up for anything. It is such a great feeling knowing that I was able to help someone to the best of my ability.

I have benefited from studying my heritage language. I also definitely hope to keep studying more in college. Being born in the United States, I had to learn both languages, therefore my Spanish isn’t the best; but being able to study helped me improve and learn different words. We all forget sometimes, and studying refreshes my memory.

My hopes for the future are to become an ophthalmologist and to make it easier for people to get their eyes checked without worrying about the bill or not being understood. If I decide to become an architect, I want to make it easier for people to get their own houses. Overall, my goal is to help my people out in any way possible, to improve their lives here in the United States.
