Language Ideologies in the Classroom

February 1, 2020 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

We present a professional development unit that introduces sociolinguistic tools that are useful in identifying and analyzing linguistic variation in Spanish, as well as the judgements that accompany particular varieties. In particular, we utilize a lens that centers the linguistic funds of knowledge that heritage learners bring to the classroom. Through this lens, educators can recognize deficit attitudes that disparage home language varieties as “slang” or “incorrect,” and instead focus on opportunities to expand students’ linguistic repertoires.
