SHL hangout | Creative Ways to Teach Spanish for Heritage Speakers: Authentic Media

March 8, 2021, 5-6pm CST (3-4pm PST / 4-5pm MST / 6-7pm EST)

Facilitated by Lilian Cano M.A., University of Texas San Antonio

In this interactive OER hangout webinar, participants will learn different ways to use authentic media (movies, short films, TV series) in Spanish heritage classes. The use of media creates an exciting learning environment where students engage in active listening while going over grammar and learning about Hispanic cultures. There are many activities that the instructor can develop according to the media type, student level, and the desired learning outcome. With authentic media, student engagement will increase. They will talk about the movie, short film, or TV series with enthusiasm and exchange ideas to further develop their critical thinking skills in Spanish. Moreover, it is an excellent way for students to bring in their families while learning about their own cultures.

Please notify us by March 1, 2021 of accessibility needs for the workshop, by emailing coerll@austin.utexas.edu.
