How Has Spanish Played a Role in Your Personal and Professional Life?

I am a psycholinguist. I have a strong publishing record in the area of language development in bilingual children and bilingual cognition, specifically generative syntactic theory, formal learnability theories, bilingual (heritage) Spanish-English language acquisition and computational modeling of bilingual language and cognition. Secondly, I have strong ties with many Latino families and school personnel as founder, volunteer director and curriculum developer of the Spanish-immersion literacy program “En Nuestra Lengua (ENL)” for Pre-kindergarten to grade 4 Spanish heritage language students. The non-profit program has been in operation since 2010 in southeastern Michigan. In 2012, the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL-Washington, DC) recognized ENL as a model program for national replication and diffusion. I also have a personal history as an English language learner from a Spanish-speaking home, which has enabled me to serve as a role model and mentor for various undergraduate and graduate students of color.
