Hola a todos! I teach a heritage Spanish at a school where 35% of our students speak some sort of Spanish at home. My department and I want to develop a way to place students in the correct level of Spanish classes. We have used STAMP as a guide but it does not give us much information on the students writing abilities (which seem to be the biggest deficit for Heritage Spanish students). What does your team use to organize students into appropriate levels? Do you have separate courses for native/heritage students?

    Gratefully, Rachel

    • @group Rachel, this is a great question. On the resources page of our website you can find a link to the Avant Spanish Heritage Language Test https://heritagespanish.coerll.utexas.edu/resources/assessments/ which was developed by the University of Houston. However, I believe that many institutions have their own in-house assessments that they use to place the students. Here at UT we don’t yet use a placement exam, but the students who identify as heritage learners are allowed to enroll in our heritage classes, and we also have help from the advisors to place the students in the right class.
I’m tagging the group on this post so that hopefully others can chime in and tell us what they do at their own institutions.

    • Hello! At our school, we designed our own placement test and it has been very helpful. If you want I can share it with you !

    • Hi Rachel! I am trying to create a platform to create the Placement exam. I saw that Nancy possibly has an idea of a platform. I would be thankful with Nancy if she share it with us. Thank you.
